Mechanical Engineering Lead

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Lead to join our team this November. We’re a fast-moving tech company based in the heart of Toronto that’s partnered with SOSV, HAX, and Offroad Robotics.
You will be responsible for leading the mechanical engineering aspects for RockMass. Major objectives include the design and manufacturing of a handheld data collection tool capable of collecting inertial measurement unit data, point clod data and colour images in industrial environments. Experience in designing and implementing power circuits and PCBs is an added benefit. You will be working alongside our software engineering team to refine the current prototype to meet various design requirements.
If desired, this position may provide the opportunity to travel up to 20% of the time.
What we’re building
We’re developing an entirely new way of collecting data that we’re implementing into an industry that’s ripe for change. Our product is a handheld data collection tool that enables engineers and geologists to quickly collect and process data into useful geological information. We use the same sensors that are used in autonomous cars (flash LiDAR + inertial measurement unit) assembled in a rugged casing in combination with our proprietary software.
You enjoy facing difficult challenges head on and have experience in robotics and mechanical systems design. You’re organized, proactive, a team player at heart and strongly value communication and transparency. You are naturally curious and motivated by the hard work others put in around you. Having worked in an environment making rapid iterations to hardware products is an added benefit.
What will you be doing?
As the Mechanical Engineering Lead, you will own all development made on the design and implementation of the mechanical and electrical components for our product.
Within one year of working at RockMass you can expect to have accomplished
A finalized mechanical design of a rugged enclosure for all electronic devices. You will work alongside an industrial designer during this project
Test reports outlining the system and instrumentation performance in underground mining environments
Developed a strategy for manufacturing and product assembly
New instrumentation research such as the inertial measurement unit and solid-state LiDAR sensor for future product iterations
Work alongside electrical engineers to integrate and test PCBs
Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering
2+ years of experience working on hardware technologies or an M.Eng or M.A.Sc in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering
Skills and experience
Highly skilled in mechanical design using Autodesk Fusion 360, Inventor, or Solidworks
Excellent communication skills and project management experience
Project portfolio demonstrating ability to design and construct electro-mechanical systems
Experience with 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining
Nice to have
Experience designing power systems for embedded electrical systems
Knowledge of PCB design software such as Altium, KiCAD, EAGLE
Familiarity with instruments such as inertial measurement units, embedded computers, capacitive touch screen, LiDAR and smart batteries
Understanding if Linux OS
